The work of the American Liver Foundation locally has been guided and supported by a Medical Advisory Committee.  Currently, under the leadership of Dr. Rohit Loomba, the division’s MAC consists of fourteen leading liver specialists in the region.  Many are also recognized as global experts in the field of liver disease research.

Through a series of strategy meetings, it was determined that our work to improve the lives of those living with liver disease would benefit by forming an Associate Medical Advisory Committee.  The AMAC would consist of RNs, NPs, PAs, PharmDs and other allied healthcare professionals.  This group would assist with the dissemination of information to patients, support our community educational programs, help with identify possible leaders for the ALF, assist with outreach and advocacy efforts.  There meetings would also provide a venue to present professional education on a particular liver disease.

Thanks to our MAC for identifying members, the AMAC held their first quarterly meeting on April 24.  Lisa Richards, MSN from UCSD serves as the chair for this newly formed committee.  That meeting’s education topic was a case study was on Hepatocellular Carcinoma presented by Yuko Kono, MD, PhD, Associate Clinical Professor, Dept. Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology - University of California San Diego.

The next AMAC meeting will be on July 24th.  If you are interested in learning more about the AMAC, please email Peggy Beers at mbeers@liverfoundation.org.

Celebrating Donate Life Month!

We had a great Rebirthday Celebration to kick-off April as Donate Life Month.  The event had six television stations in attendance.  Below are a couple links to the stories aired.   4 transplant recipients shared their stories encouraging others to be organ donors and after the event Lisa Stocks from LifeSharing thanked the ALF for bringing our partners from the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, American Lung Association and the National Kidney Foundation together for a joint celebration media event.  It’s the first time they’ve done this, and everyone felt we would do it again next year.  Blythe, our former Liver Champion, represented ALF, and her mother Neshea also gave a heartwarming talk about the importance of organ donation.

Meet Dr. Lisa Nyberg!

Dr. Lisa Nyberg has been a Kaiser Permanente staff transplant hepatologist since 2002, where she was named Internist of the Year in 2016!  She is well-respected locally in San Diego, regionally through southern California, and nationally for her clinical work and studies on viral hepatitis and on fatty liver disease.

While too many to list individually, accomplishments of Dr. Nyberg’s include currently serving as the principal clinical investigator for three epidemiological studies on Hepatitis C (HCV).  Dr. Nyberg’s local San Diego Kaiser Permanente hepatology team has presented 21 abstracts at several annual conferences in the US, Europe and Asia.  In 2015-6, Dr. Nyberg has served as the Principal Investigator and led a local Kaiser Permanente coalition in treating Hepatitis C patients with a multiple anti-retroviral drug regimen.   Through the dedicated work of Dr. Nyberg as lead transplant hepatologist, SCPMG has been able to offer its members new, cutting-edge HCV treatment regimens long before they are FDA-approved.  Many lives have been saved from progressive liver failure, liver cancer, liver transplant or death.

Aside from serving on ALF’s Board of Directors and Medical Advisory Committee, Dr, Nyberg is also a Team Captain at the annual Liver Life Walk San Diego.  CLICK HERE to join her team.

The American Liver Foundation SUPPORTS California Assembly Bill 2863, introduced by Assembly Member Nazarian, and Coauthored by Assembly Members Burke and Wood.

The American Liver Foundation is against any coverage action that is not patient-centered. The practice of clawback pushes costs onto patients and creates barriers to care. We feel AB2863 would help increase access to treatment by ending the clawback practice. Thus, the American Liver Foundation supports AB2863.
